RE: Important Updates from the Office of the Superintendent

    Dear Raider Nation,

I trust this communication finds you and your family safe and well. I hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving. I hope you were able to spend some quality time with family and friends. This notice is sent to notify you of some very important updates from the GCDSD Office of the Superintendent. These updates were approved this past week by the GCDSD Board of Directors at its Regular Board Meeting.

First, two administrative changes were made, which are effective today, December 2, 2024. Mrs. Shamra Steffler was reassigned as the Coordinator of Alternative Learning (ALE). Mrs. Steffler’s office will be located at the LRHS Alternative Campus in Grand Coulee. Additionally, Mr. Todd Phillips, current ALE Director was reassigned and appointed as the new Vice Principal of Lake Roosevelt Elementary School. Mr. Phillps will continue to conduct CTE Teacher observations at the high school. These changes were approved and will be implemented to align with Goal 1 of the new District Strategic Plan that states: GCDSD will improve student performance standards by at least 20%, as measured by Washington State School Report Card.

Additionally, the GCDSD Board of Education voted unanimously for the district to transition to a four day school week, beginning in the 2025 – 2026 school year. The draft of the 2025 – 2026 calendar is available; however, the Board will vote on the calendar within the next few months. The administration will continue to distribute information and directions concerning the four day school week, and keep all stakeholders abreast of any changes throughout the remainder of the school year.

Finally, there will be a Levy 2025 Town hall Meeting with the district’s representative on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. The Town hall will take place in the LRHS Hub, from 6PM – 7PM. There will be no athletic contests on the day of the meeting. We ask all stakeholders to be present. Our new Culinary Arts Program will showcase at the meeting.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office. You may contact me via phone at 509-633-2143 or via email at rbroadnax@gcdsd.org.

    RE: Choice IN Transfer Paperwork

    Greetings GCDSD Families,

I trust this communication finds you and your family safe and well. You are receiving this very important message because your child still needs to choice into the Grand Coulee Dam School District. There was a deadline of October 31, 2024; however, since the choice transfer portal has been down and parents have been unable to complete the proper paperwork, OSPI has granted the district an extension, which is December 1, 2024. However, we would like to expedite this process; therefore, please complete the choice transfer paperwork, as soon as possible.

Thank you for your cooperation and prompt attention to this matter.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Office of the Superintendent. You may reach me via email at

RE: New Traffic Pattern for LRES

    Dear Raider Family,

I trust this communication finds you and your family safe and well. This communication is sent to notify you that beginning Tuesday, October 15, 2024, Lake Roosevelt Elementary School will implement a new traffic pattern for afternoon pick up. This traffic pattern will be implemented to stay in compliance with traffic laws. According to the police, the current traffic pattern impedes the flow of traffic, which is a violation.

It is the intent of the Grand Coulee Dam School District to abide by the law and to ensure a smooth and safe dismissal experience for parents and students. Therefore, students in kindergarten, first and second grades will continue to be picked up in the same location, which is in the normal pick-up zone. However, students in third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades will be picked up on the sidewalk along Central Drive and between Crest and Civic Drive.

Additionally, if you have a student in both of these groups, they may remain on the side of the building as they previously have, with their younger sibling. With this change, we hope to expedite your time in traffic and provide you with a smoother dismissal experience.  Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

As always, thank you for partnering with GCDSD and allowing us to educate your child(ren).

    Yours in Education,

    Rodriguez F. Broadnax, Ed.S.
    Superintendent

  • PERTUSSIS ALERT

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) Health Alert Network (HAN) recently sent an advisory about the rise of pertussis (whooping cough) cases in multiple jurisdictions. As of May 4, 2024, there have been a total of 170 confirmed or probable cases of pertussis across 15 counties in Washington. This marks a sixfold increase in reported pertussis cases as compared to this time last year.

    Office of Immunization vaccine recommendations:

    • All children should receive a series of DTaP at ages 2, 4, and 6 months. Boosters should be given at ages 15-18 months and at 4-6 years.
    • Adolescents should receive a single dose of Tdap (instead of Td) at the 11-12-year-old visit.
    • Adolescents and adults who have not received a dose of Tdap, or whose vaccine status is unknown, should receive a single dose of Tdap.
    • Children 7-10 years old who did not complete a series of pertussis-containing vaccine before their seventh birthday should receive a single dose of Tdap. If needed, they should complete their series with Td or Tdap. If a Tdap dose is administered at age 10 or older, the Tdap dose may count as the adolescent Tdap dose.
    • All healthcare personnel, regardless of age, should receive a single dose of Tdap if they have not previously received Tdap and regardless of the time since the last dose of Td.
    • Pregnant teens and adults should receive Tdap during each pregnancy, preferably between 27 and 36 weeks of gestation.
    • Mothers who have never received Tdap and who do not receive it during pregnancy should receive it immediately postpartum (following birth).
